The original building
Dating from the early 1900s, the buildings were first used as a bicycle repair workshop and sales shop, serving cyclists from the surrounding area.
As transport evolved, the workshop expanded its services to include the repair and maintenance of mobylettes.
During the 1940s, as cars and motorcycles became more widely available and affordable, the business adapted to changing times.
Petrol and diesel pumps were installed to serve the growing number of motorists in the area.
By the 1960s the site was selling Esso petrol, and the appearance of the building changed significantly.
The original stone walls and wooden window frames gave way to a white-painted frontage with metal-framed windows, reflecting the ‘modern’ petrol station style of the period.
The work begins
Closed and Abandoned in the early 2000´s the building was renovated by Martin and Denise Looker in 2024 to provide two art spaces.
These spaces respect the history of the building whilst providing flexible art spaces.
The success of the renovation can be seen below.
